Chinese New Years Coloring Page

Here’s a fun Chinese New Year Coloring Page to help students celebrate the 2024 Year of the Dragon. Save it for your older students as it’s got quite a bit of detail to it!

This Chinese New Year Coloring Page is designed to imitate paper cutting, a style that originated in China during Northern Dynasties (386-481). Red paper was often used as it is a colour associated with celebrations and happiness in Chinese culture.

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival begins on Saturday, February 10th, and will be the Year of the Dragon. Teachers can print the PDF template on white paper and let students color it as they wish, or use the steps below to achieve the metallic red look.

Pamela W. was one of my readers who shared this idea with me and sent me a sample. I’m a long-time fan of metallic markers, especially the kid friendly ones like Crayola makes, but I never tried filling a a coloring page with them before. She began with red paper and used metallic markers to fill all the small shapes. This is a clever way to achieve this rich look. Pamela – thanks for sharing your brilliant idea!

“Thank you Kathy Barbro of Art Projects for Kids for the pdf of the paper mural.
We printed out 9 sheets of the red paper. We assembled it. Cut out the large shapes. Assembled 9 sheets of gold glitter paper. Glued red paper cut into delicate shapes to the glitter back. Cut out each detail and glue it in place. That’s a lot of cutting, gluing, and meticulous attention to detail. This shiny paper mural is going to be displayed @nvrc at the John Braithwaite Community Centre.”

Thank you Pamela, it’s truly stunning!
