Lois Mailou Jones Mask
This Lois Mailou Jones project was inspired by the artist and includes a lesson on mask drawing. It includes one of the ways I love to draw masks. “age”Cover any drawing in black oil pastels and then scrape them off. It’s a process also known as sgraffito and can be messy, but the final etched look is well worth the trouble.
Lois Mailou Jones (1905 – 1998) had an impressive career, but do you know how she got started? She worked as a fabric designer and sold her bold fabrics to department store. One day a decorator told her that a colored girl wasn’t capable of producing such beautiful designs. Jones decided to focus on fine arts to be able to sign her name and have no doubts about her.
